More About First Visit

A child’s first visit to a pediatric dentist is an important milestone that can set the tone for their future dental health. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that a child go to the dentist by age 1 or within six months after the first tooth erupts. Here’s what you can expect during their initial visit:

Warm Welcome: Our friendly team will greet your child (and you!) and help with any necessary paperwork. Our environment is colorful, fun, and kid-friendly to make our young patients feel comfortable.

Introduction to the Dental Office: Your child will be introduced to our dental team and given a tour of the office. This often includes showing them dental tools and equipment, which are often brightly colored or shaped like animals to appear less intimidating.

Discussion about Dental History and Habits: Our team will talk with you about your child’s medical history, oral habits (like thumb sucking), diet, and fluoride use.

Oral Examination: We will perform a gentle examination of the child’s teeth, jaw, bite, gums, and oral tissues to monitor growth and development and detect any potential problems. For very young children, this may take place in the parent’s lap for comfort.

Cleaning and Fluoride Treatment: Depending on the age and cooperation of the child, a gentle cleaning may be done to remove plaque or tartar. A fluoride treatment might also be applied to protect the teeth.

Guidance on Home Care: Our team will often educate the parent or guardian on proper at-home oral care for your child, including correct brushing and flossing techniques. We’ll also discuss teething, the importance of regular dental check-ups, and the impact of diet on oral health.

Opportunity for Questions: We will provide an opportunity for you to ask any questions you may have about your child’s oral health.

Scheduling the Next Visit: Before leaving, the next check-up will be scheduled, typically in six months, to maintain regular dental visits and establish good oral health habits.

The goal of the first visit is not just to examine your child’s teeth, but also to build trust and comfort with our team and our environment, reducing anxiety for future visits.
